Jamaican Patois is a creole language, of Jamaican origin. Patois uses vocabulary largely derived from Europe but uses a distinctly non-European (primarily African) grammar. Specifically, Patois is derived from a combination of English (and Spanish prior to English) and several West African languages. Jamaican Patois is sometimes referred to as Patwa, Jamaican Creole or, simply, Jamaican.
